Webcounter.ca dashboard preview

The analytics people actually read

Live activity

Arrivals, active pages, and recent sessions as they happen — no waiting for a daily batch to land.

Pages and sources

Entry and exit pages, what people read, which referrers bring them, and UTM campaign breakdowns.

Locations and devices

Country, region, and city on an interactive world map, plus browser, OS, device type, screen size, and language.

Goals and funnels

Custom events and goals with optional revenue values, and ordered multi-step funnels with drop-off and abandonment stats.

Network view

Compare several properties from one account. Visitor identities stay separate per site and are never linked across them.

Controlled sharing

Revocable share links — optionally password-protected and range-limited — plus scheduled email reports and CSV/JSON export on every table.

A smaller data footprint, by construction

Cookieless by default

The browser collector sets no visitor cookie. Visitor identifiers are derived with a keyed hash whose salt rotates at midnight UTC, so identifiers de-link within 24 hours. A site can opt into a consent-gated first-party identifier for returning-visitor reporting; it never creates an advertising identity.

Raw addresses are never stored

IP addresses are transformed on arrival and dropped. Geolocation resolves locally against a bundled dataset, so no visitor address is ever sent to a third-party lookup service.

Privacy signals respected

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are honoured by default for new sites. Bots are dropped at ingest rather than merely flagged in reports.

Written non-goals

No session replay. No fingerprinting. No cross-site identity graphs. No data brokerage. These are published product commitments, not just defaults.

Domain, source, and a running service

The webcounter.ca domain

Apex plus the dev subdomain, with the live TLS setup and the brand assets — icon, social card, and PWA manifest.

Complete source

Roughly 34,000 lines of Python across the application and its operational scripts. Flask blueprints for collection, dashboard, API, reports, sharing, and alerts.

Live deployment

nginx, systemd, and gunicorn on MongoDB and Redis, with scheduled maintenance timers, health probes, and a deploy flow that auto-rolls-back on a failed probe.

Documented API

A JSON API with an OpenAPI 3.1 contract covering 54 paths and 70 operations, read-only and management API keys, and queued full-fidelity raw exports.

Monitoring and alerts

HTTPS uptime monitoring with incident history, customer alert rules for spikes, drops, anomalies, and stalled collection, delivered by email and encrypted Web Push.

Accounts and compliance

Email-verified signup, TOTP MFA with recovery codes, 30-day recoverable deletion, and a published legal pack — Privacy Notice, Terms, AUP, DPA, retention, security.txt, and an accessibility statement.

An early-stage product, honestly described

Live, and free to use

Webcounter.ca went public on 31 July 2026 and is running today. It is currently a free service with no billing code and no paid tier, so what changes hands is the product, brand, domain, and deployment — not an existing revenue stream.

Built to a finished standard

98 tracked bugs with none open, 118 tracked test files including a real-browser journey matrix, and an external launch review on file. The value here is engineering and compliance maturity rather than traction.

Bilingual and accessible

Fully bilingual English and French at exact string parity, including the legal pack. Built against a WCAG 2.2 AA target with a published conformance gap list.

Self-managed infrastructure

Runs on a Canadian dedicated server with MongoDB, Redis, and a local geolocation dataset. A buyer takes on real infrastructure, which is what keeps visitor data inside one jurisdiction.
